Hotel Riu Cabo Verde: The Adults-Only Riu on Sal

This is Riu's adults-only property on Sal, a 5-star listed under the chain's Luxury label, sitting on the same Cabocan strip as its family-friendly sister Riu Funana. The design leans on African-inspired arches, mosaics, and wooden ornaments set against bright minimalist decor. Days revolve around two pools and the beach; nights run on the main theater and outdoor stage, with programs that move from live music to Cape Verdean dance performances.

The all inclusive plan covers the buffet, snacks, and drinks at six bars. Because no one under 18 can stay, the pool scene stays quieter than at the family Rius next door. Reviews back the staff above everything else: the service subscore sits at 9.2, and the most-liked recent review calls the team friendly, helpful, and super attentive.

Three room types were bookable at the August 2026 check, all with balconies and all sleeping up to three. Sizes are decent for the island: even the standard runs 301 square feet, and the Suite adds a separate sitting area at 452 square feet.

The honest part, straight from guests: several recent reviews call the rooms dated. One October 2025 guest wrote that the beds are comfy but the furniture is old and not 5-star quality, and an April 2026 reviewer agreed the rooms are a bit outdated while noting they were always cleaned properly and the rest of the resort is not. Two practical quirks to know before booking: the property has no elevator, and since this is an adults-only house there are no cribs and no extra beds.

Rates carried a reserve now, pay later flag at the time of checking.

Dining centers on the main buffet, which runs breakfast, lunch, and dinner with live cooking stations plus options like pizza and Mexican dishes. A snack bar covers the gaps between meals. Drinks come from six bars and lounges, spread across a swim-up bar, a poolside bar, and a beach bar.

Set expectations on the pours: across Cape Verde's all inclusive resorts the drinks are predominantly local and house brands, including the local grogue rum, not imported premium labels. Within this hotel group, imported drinks are only listed at the Riu Palace Boavista.

Guest verdicts on the food split cleanly. An April 2026 reviewer called the food options excellent and liked that the buffet meals changed daily with a few consistent staples. A December 2025 guest was disappointed, rating the overall quality of food and drinks below other Riu resorts he had stayed at, and an October 2025 review called it pretty much the same standard all inclusive food as you normally get. Plan for a solid buffet, not fine dining.

Two outdoor pools anchor the resort, lined with loungers and umbrellas, and one has a built-in swim-up bar so you never have to leave the water for a drink. The catch guests keep flagging: the main pool is huge and very lovely, but you need to be quick in the morning to get a sunbed. A French reviewer from April 2025 put it in one line: no space on the pool sun loungers.

Renova Spa handles recovery days with a hydromassage bathtub, a sauna, and a steam room, plus a hot tub inside the spa.

The beach is white sand with immediate access to the ocean, but read the water before you swim: an October 2025 guest reported the waves are crazy near the hotel and the beach is much better near town. Santa Maria town is about a 15 minute walk along the sand, and the same guest walked it during the day and after dark no problem at all. A taxi into town costs around €5 (550 CVE) one way if the wind picks up.

The resort shares the Cabocan strip with Riu Funana, a short hop south of Santa Maria town. Plenty of guests skip the taxi entirely: the walk into town runs about 15 minutes along the sand, and one October 2025 reviewer did it by day and after dark with no problem at all. Driving, nothing in the table below takes longer than the 20 minute airport run.

The paperwork rules are strict in the way big chains usually are. Payment is by credit card, debit card or cash, the property may pre-authorize your card before you arrive, and check-in can require a government-issued photo ID plus a card or cash deposit for incidentals. Name changes on reservations are not permitted: the name on the booking must match the guest checking in.

Because the house is adults only, there are no cribs and no extra beds of any kind, and pets and service animals are not allowed.

Access-wise, the resort is listed as wheelchair accessible with possible limitations. There is no elevator, but accessible parking, a path of travel, a pool, a restaurant, the spa and the registration desk are all on the list, and self-parking is included. Two smaller rules to finish: only registered guests may enter the guestrooms, and some of the property's water is reused through a grey water recycling system.

Book It If

You want an adults-only, all inclusive week on Sal at a mid-tier price: at $316 a night it undercuts the two Riu Palace properties by a wide margin while keeping the beach, the swim-up bar, and the nightly shows. The 9.2 service score is the most consistent thing in the reviews, and Santa Maria's bars and restaurants sit an easy 15 minute walk away, which the big Boa Vista resorts cannot offer.
