Riu runs several resorts around Santa Maria, and this one carries the Palace label, the name the chain reserves for its highest tier. Locally sourced natural limestone clads the main facade, which sets a Cape Verde tone from the moment the taxi pulls in, and the buildings sit directly on the sand at Cabocan, a short drive south of town. All inclusive here means unlimited gourmet dining plus themed beach parties, and the evening program runs daily, with live music and professional after-dinner shows.

The scale is the point. Eight pools spread across the resort, six of them facing the beach and linked by a wide sun deck, and the Splash Water World water park sits inside the hotel complex, so families never leave the grounds for a slide day. Couples get their own escape valve in the adults-only swim-up rooms and an 18-plus spa and gym. It is a resort built to keep two very different audiences out of each other's way, and the review scores suggest it works.

Five room categories were bookable when we checked in August 2026, all priced for an early September night, and rates move with the season. Every category runs all inclusive with free WiFi, and most sell as fully refundable with a reserve now, pay later option, which matters on an island where flight schedules shift.

Which Room To Pick

The swim-up doubles are the signature: adults only, a king bed, bathrobes and direct private pool access, and only a handful exist, so they go first. The sea view balcony doubles are the sensible splurge at roughly $100 over the base rate. The Family Room sleeps four with a separate sitting area and a crib on offer, and it was the one category already sold out when we checked, so book it earliest of all.

Two structural notes worth knowing before you commit: the property has no elevator, and rollaway or extra beds are not available, so the stated sleep counts are hard limits. Guest reports on the rooms themselves run positive; Marcine, who stayed in April 2025, called them very nice, and Barbara found hers cleaned every day in May 2026.

The plan is built around the main buffet, with breakfast included, and four themed specialty restaurants: Italian, Japanese, a Steakhouse, and the signature Krystal, plus a fusion venue. All inclusive covers unlimited gourmet dining, and the resort layers themed beach parties on top of the standard evening program.

Two honest notes. First, guests rate the food well overall, and Gregory called it varied and really good after his March 2026 stay, but the Steakhouse divides opinion: Werner scored his February 2026 visit 6/10 and called that one venue really bad, so treat it as the gamble among the four. Second, as at most Cape Verde all inclusives, expect the drinks list to lean on local and house brands rather than imported premium labels; of the Riu properties on these islands, only Riu Palace Boavista lists imported pours in its plan. If a specific whisky matters to you, budget for the bar bill.

Eight pools spread across the grounds, six facing the beach and linked by a wide sun deck, and one is wheelchair accessible. The Splash Water World water park carries the family load, which leaves the remaining pools calmer than you would expect at a resort this size. Sunbeds are the usual all inclusive battleground on Sal, but the reviews here read differently: Gregory found plenty of sunloungers and plenty of shade at both the pools and the beach in March 2026, which is not a sentence you read often about a 5-star on this island.

The full-service spa earns steady praise, with Barbara reporting the pool and spa in excellent condition in May 2026, and both the spa and the gym are closed to guests under 18. The beach starts where the sun deck ends, with loungers, umbrellas and windsurfing on the sand, and the water on this stretch of Sal's south coast is the calmest in the country. When you want restaurants and shops off the plan, Santa Maria Town Square is a 6 minute drive, and the town beach and pier sit about 8 minutes away.

The resort sits at Cabocan, on its own stretch of sand south of Santa Maria rather than in town. That buys a quieter beach and costs a short taxi whenever you want the shops, bars and pier, and at 23 minutes the airport transfer is the longest of the Santa Maria cluster. Nothing on the list below needs more than a quarter hour in a car.

Payment and paperwork first. The hotel accepts credit cards, debit cards and cash, reserves the right to pre-authorize your card before arrival, and can ask for a government-issued photo ID plus a card or cash deposit at check-in to cover incidentals. Name changes on reservations are not permitted, so the person named on the booking must be the one checking in, ID in hand.

Beyond that: there is no after-hours check-in, pets and service animals are not allowed, and rollaway or extra beds do not exist, though children are welcome and the Family Room comes with a crib.

Accessibility is better than the no-elevator headline suggests. The property lists a wheelchair-accessible path of travel plus an accessible pool, gym, spa, restaurant and registration desk, with the standard caveat that access may have limitations, so confirm specifics before booking if step-free matters. A few quieter rules round it out: only registered guests are allowed in guestrooms, the resort warns that balconies and terraces may not suit small children, and some water on site is reused through a grey water recycling system.

Book It If

You want the most polished all inclusive on Sal and the scores to prove it. Families get the water park, a Family Room built for four and a beach with calm water; couples get swim-up rooms, an adults-only spa and four restaurants to rotate through. It is also the safe pick for a first trip to Cape Verde, since the cleanliness and service subscores, both 9.4, are the highest of any resort on the island's south coast.

Compare it against the rest of the Sal and Boa Vista resorts before you commit.

Look Elsewhere If

Budget leads the decision: Riu Funana, a few minutes up the same coast, starts at $290 a night against $430 here, and shares the same beach zone. If you want an entirely adults-only resort rather than adults-only corners, Melia Llana does that with a lower entry price. Stairs are the other filter, because there is no elevator here.
